Gender-based violence (GBV)PhD in Gender-related Violence (1 fte 100%)
Recent years have witnessed an increase in attention to gender-related violence, the most extreme type of which constitutes femicide, or the killing of women because of their gender. Despite its importance, systematic research on its scope, patterns, causes and
consequences remains fragmented. This PhD position seeks to bridge this knowledge gap by consolidating state-of-the-art empirical work, establishing a comprehensive dataset, and developing theoretical frameworks to better understand and respond to gender-related violence.
What you will do
The primary objective of this PhD project is to provide an in-depth understanding of (lethal) violence against women in the Netherlands through a comprehensive analysis of existing and newly collected data. Key questions include: What is the nature and scope of femicide in the Netherlands? What are the most common patterns across different contexts? How can these patterns be theoretically and empirically explained, and how to best respond to such violence? Are there distinctive characteristics in the Dutch context when compared to other national or regional trends?
The project will utilize a mixed-method approach, combining quantitative and qualitative research techniques. It will draw upon the Dutch Femicide Monitor, including data from law enforcement, public prosecutor, courts and the media. Additionally, the project seeks to incorporate newly collected data, including interviews, judicial proceedings and case studies of non-fatal violence. The integration of these diverse data sources will allow for a comprehensive and nuanced analysis of the patterns and underlying drivers of gender-related violence.
The PhD candidate will:
- Conduct high-quality research and write a PhD dissertation on gender-related violence;
- Actively participate in the research, publication, and communication activities of the project, including collecting and analysing relevant data, co-authoring academic and non-academic publications, and assisting in organizing and presenting at workshops and conferences;
- Take relevant courses and training;
- Participate in the PhD program activities and the intellectual life of the Institute.
What you bring- A (Research) Master’s degree in Criminology, Sociology, Gender Studies, Psychology, Public Health, Crisis and Security Management or a related social science field.
- Excellent command of English and Dutch.
- An excellent command of and experience with both qualitative and quantitative research methods.
- A substantive interest in and extensive background knowledge of violence research, with a focus on gender-related violence.
Willingness and ability to contribute to teaching in the Minor Violence Studies and in other courses in Bachelor Security Studies and in the Master Crisis & Security Management. - Excellent study results and academic skills, demonstrated in the Bachelor’s and Master’s course transcripts.
- The ability to work independently, and as part of a team, demonstrated in prior research, work or internship experience.
- A strong ethical commitment to the critical examination and meaningful response to violence against women.

Gender-based violence (GBV) Movement buildingWho We Are
Urgent Action Fund–Africa (UAF-Africa) is a feminist, pan-African rapid response Fund committed to transforming power relations through resourcing African feminists and womn’s1 human rights defenders (AWHRDs) and their formations as an act of solidarity.
About the Feminist Republik
UAF-Africa is hosting the 3rd Feminist Republik Festival (3rd FRF), set to take place in Mombasa, Kenya, from 27-30 November 2025. The Festival will be a further opportunity for AWHRDs and feminist movements to learn, link and connect while sharing on and around what regeneration looks like in the wake of rising polycrises and increased resistance to feminist organising. The 3rd edition will centre the lived realities of WHRDs from crisis contexts across the continent, unpack what feminist response to crisis means and inviting us to reflect on trauma through the lens of crisis. Through group discussions, storytelling, art, song, poetry and dance, we aim to critically engage with a critique of the systems that have never worked for us, explore transformational futures, and get re-energised and rejuvenated in the process. The festival will be designed with moments to grieve and celebrate. The healing justice research findings have also surfaced traditional healing practices that have been applied in feminist settings that we are interested in surfacing and collectively practising during the festival. The assignment UAF-Africa is seeking a dynamic and experienced rapporteur to document, capture, and reflect the essence of the Festival. The rapporteur will be responsible for capturing powerful stories, in-depth discussions, and the nuances emerging from AWHRDs as they engage with themes of crisis, trauma, healing, and collective care. The final report will include clear quotes, actionable insights, and concrete recommendations, serving as a vital resource to amplify the voices, visions, and strategies shared throughout the event.
Competences
• Strong writing and analytical skills with the ability to synthesise complex discussions into clear, compelling narratives. • Experience in feminist or social justice spaces, with a deep understanding of gender, intersectionality, and human rights.
• Excellent listening and observation skills, with the ability to capture nuance, tone, and context.
• Experience in event documentation, including live note-taking, interviews, and reporting from conferences or gatherings.
• Cultural sensitivity and emotional intelligence are significant when engaging with trauma-informed or healing-centred conversations.
• Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and to respect consent and confidentiality protocols.
• Strong coordination and time management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple documentation formats.
• Proficiency in English (Portuguese, Arabic and French, if relevant), with clear communication skills.*When clicking on “Apply”, you will be redirected to the original job announcement and details
