Deakin University
- Career category: Research/ Data analysis
- Job type: Job
- Experience level: 0-2 years
- Organisation type: Research
- Remote option: No
- Right to work requirements: Right to work required in advance
- Remuneration: AUD 37,450 AUD / yearly
- Work schedule: Full-time
- Length of contract: Temporary/ Fixed-term
GBV / VAWGThis project explores how young people (aged 18-34) interpret and respond to public and media discourse on gender-based violence (GBV), with a focus on the identity, relational, and contextual factors that shape their engagement with prevention initiatives. It tackles the critical challenge of volatile and polarising GBV narratives, which can alienate certain groups and overlook diverse perspectives. The project seeks to generate actionable insights to enhance the effectiveness of GBV prevention strategies, public campaigns, and educational programs.
The study employs a multi-methods qualitative design, consisting of three interconnected stages:
- artefact engagements,
- digital storytelling workshops, and
- theory-building and practice.
This candidate will work within a team. They will select an aspect of the research to extend or examine in more depth to enhance the study’s contribution. For example, the candidate may investigate in more depth the utility of digital storytelling as documenting factors of engagement (Stage 2 of the study design). They will be involved in the project theory building and in dissemination activities. The team will provide research training and mentorship, e.g. specialised training relating to collaborative and creative research methods, analysis and dissemination, and the ethical conduct of research. Background information
The PhD candidate will undertake research as part of the ARC-funded project Addressing Gender-based Violence in Volatile and Polarising Times, which investigates how young people (aged 18–34) interpret and respond to contemporary public and media discourse on gender-based violence (GBV) and related prevention initiatives.
While awareness of GBV has increased in Australia, this has occurred within an increasingly polarised gender landscape characterised by backlash narratives, online misogyny, and emotional disengagement, particularly among young men and gender-diverse youth. These dynamics risk undermining inclusive and effective gender justice efforts.
The candidate’s research will focus on examining young people’s engagement and disengagement with GBV discourse and initiatives, with particular attention to emotional, relational, and intersectional factors shaping their responses. Drawing on qualitative methods, the student will be embedded within one or more stages of the project, such as artefact-based workshops and/or digital storytelling, to explore how young people navigate conflicting narratives around feminism, masculinity, responsibility, and harm. The research will contribute to theory-building around gender justice as a dynamic, context-responsive process, conceptualising engagement not as binary but as fluid and multidimensional.
The project involves collaboration with national and international partners through an Expert Reference Group, including OurWatch, Respect Victoria, Equimundo, Beyond Equality, and Indigenous and multicultural organisations. These partnerships provide a strong applied context for the student’s work and support pathways for research translation and impact in policy, education, and community settings.Am I eligible?
To be eligible you must:
- be a domestic candidate. Domestic includes candidates with Australian Citizenship, Australian Permanent Residency or New Zealand Citizenship
- meet Deakin's PhD entry requirements
- enrol full time
- hold an honour's degree (first class) or an equivalent standard master's degree with a substantial research component

Gender equality and Social inclusion (GESI) Generic (e.g. 'gender focal point' roleAbout the research projectArtificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly become embedded in everyday decision-making-shaping access to jobs, credit, healthcare, information and even personal autonomy-yet its development and deployment are far from neutral. Gendered impacts surface through interconnected harms: allocative harm, where opportunities are withheld or burdens imposed (as in biased recruitment systems); representational harm, where stereotyping, under-representation, and denigration are reproduced (including the feminised and racialized design of voice interfaces); and knowledge inequality-based harm, where gaps in AI literacy and the "missing women" across design, deployment, and leadership entrench exclusion. These harms are intensified by intersectional factors-race, age, class, language, and migration status-creating feedback loops that amplify pre-existing inequalities. From non-consensual synthetic image abuse to its use in recruitment, from datafication of sexual and reproductive health decisions to its application in a welfare setting, AI can both mirror and magnify old misogyny.
About the roleThe Faculty of Law is currently seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow for a two-year fixed term contract to contribute to this research. You will design and lead a research project on an aspect of the regulation of artificial intelligence (AI) that specifically addresses its gendered impacts. The overall work of the Postdoctoral Research Fellow will support the goal of deepening knowledge in Australia and globally on the gendered impacts of artificial intelligence. You will also work with the Chair to roll out a series of activities including talks and a Research Incubator Workshop and/or Academic Symposium on gender-responsive governance of AI. The Fellow will actively participate in the research visits of other academics as invited by the Chair. You will be allocated and will manage an annual project budget for the research that you design.
About YouWe are looking for a candidate with:• Completed (or close to completion) a PhD in Law, or in related discipline but with an undergraduate degree in law• Demonstrated scholarly interest and ability in issues of law and regulation related to AI, gender and/or women's rights• Strong evidence of outstanding analytic ability and academic writing skills, including the capacity to produce high quality peer-reviewed academic publications, demonstrated by scholarly publications commensurate with opportunity• A commitment to interdisciplinary research in relation to AI, gender and women's rights;• Experience or demonstrated interest in contributing to relevant policy debates and communication with government, community and/or industry stakeholders;• Ability and willingness to work independently to generate distinctive contributions to scholarly knowledge in relation to the Chair's program of work;*When clicking on “Apply”, you will be redirected to the original job announcement and details

Movement buildingCONSULTANCY BACKGROUNDBetween 2009-2012, The Individual Deprivation Measure (IDM) tool was developed in partnership with the Australian National University. The tool design was informed by participatory research with more than 3,000 people with lived experience of poverty across 18 sites in six countries in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, including Angola, Fiji, Indonesia, Malawi, Mozambique, and the Philippines.Following the testing and refinement of the IDM measure, seven data collections took place between 2015 and2021. In 2020, IWDA took this work forward as a flagship program and rebranded from the IDM to Equality Insights. Building on the foundations of the IDM, Equality Insights had continued to adapt. In 2021, the IDM survey was reduced to a shorter variant, resulting in a 40% reduction in the number of questions (from 304 to 183). This reduced the survey duration and lowered the overall cost of administering the IDM survey. An analysis of 5 country studies, literature reviews, and discussions with subject matter experts was conducted to assess each question and justify each modification to the dimensions. The new Equality Insights Plus (EI Plus) survey was developed over a period of 4 months for a face-to-face survey administration.Finalising and documenting the EI Plus survey was not completed due to a pivot to develop a remote-administered phone survey model that could be used in the Covid-19 context, called Equality Insights Rapid (EI Rapid), which was implemented for the first time in Solomon Islands and Tonga in 2022.Both Equality Insights Plus and Equality Insights Rapid assess multidimensional poverty and in individual-level by measuring fifteen dimensions of life – clothing, education, energy, environment, family planning, food, health, relationships, safety, sanitation, shelter, time use, voice, water and work. They also assess financial circumstances by measuring assets.CONSULTANCY OBJECTIVESObjectives will involve the following for the 16 topics (15 Equality Insights dimensions plus assets)- Present clear comparisons of indicators and questions across the three survey variants (IDM, EI Plus and EI Rapid)
- Collate existing decisions, and discussions which are documented in Equality Insights program files
- Clean and label Equality Insights Plus dataset to enable analysis
- A brief desk-based review and a high-level summary of current best practice standards and innovations indicators and data collection per thematic area.
Each of these objectives to be clearly presented in a report. While the only output is the report which is internally facing it is expected the consultant will meet with relevant Equality Insights team members at the commencement of the contract, to confirm project scope and process and at least once during the project to ensure the project is on track and meeting standards required.REQUIREMENTSThis role is suitable to an early career or student researcher. (Basic quantitative data analysis skills are required.)- Research skills
- Experience with survey data processing, including familiarity with Stata software.
- Understanding of poverty measurement, and survey tools and design
- Excellent attention to detail
