We are currently seeking to appoint a Co – Executive Director – Programmes who is a visionary with exceptional leadership skills, to drive the organisation forward as we build on over a decade of achievements and face new strategic challenges. You will be responsible for leading an exciting strategic plan, developing and guiding Sonke’s strategic vision through managing internal and external processes that seek to deepen the objectives of the organisation.
You will be the key spokesperson for Sonke and will lead high-level networking dialogues and will represent Sonke through participation in key events at regional and international levels. Reporting to the Board of Directors, you will be responsible for managing staff from the full management team, as well as developing and implementing a long-term funding model.
Educational requirements:
A post graduate qualification i.e. a Master’s Degree in public health, law, education, development studies and/or business science qualifications. A PhD will be advantageous.
Experience required
- Minimum of ten years’ experience in a senior management position and in a similar size or larger organisation.
- Significant experience working to promote social equality and ideally in gender equality, preventing domestic and sexual violence and addressing HIV and AIDS, including preferably an understanding of work with men, and preferably in Southern Africa.
- Significant experience with operations, finances, HR, fundraising, donor liaison and strategy, as well as proposal development, is essential.
- Excellent writing skills in English and preferably, but not required, the ability to speak another SA language, as well as the ability to travel extensively.

The Women Human Rights Defenders International Coalition (WHRD-IC) is a transnational, intersectional feminist coalition of women human rights defenders, feminists, trans and non-binary activists and organisations, and their allies. Our mission is to deepen and sustain the collective power and resistance of WHRDs and their collective organising, across the intersections of movements, issues and regions.
Purpose of consultancy:
The WHRD-IC is seeking a researcher, group of researchers or research organisation to develop a new Global Report on the Situation of Women Human Rights Defenders.
The WHRDIC’s previous Global Report is available here. The new research should be intersectional, cross-issue, cross-regional and cross-movement, reflecting the broad understanding of “women human rights defenders” as women, trans and non-binary defenders engaged in any human rights work and activism, and people of all genders engaged and working on gender and sexuality.
The research will rely on a combination of hired expertise, contributions from WHRDIC members, and structured collaborative processes across the Coalition, its partners and allies.Objectives of the research:
The consultant will produce a global report that:
- Provides an overview of key trends, challenges, threats, and violations faced by WHRDs globally, across regions, identities, and movements.
- Develops a cross-regional, cross-issue, and cross-movement analysis of the human rights work of WHRDs, the evolving risks they face within the contexts of backlash and polycrisis, and the political environments shaping their struggles.
- Identifies new and emerging dynamics in the WHRD landscape while building on previous publications by WHRDIC and its members and foundational collective knowledge.
- Documents and amplifies stories of resistance, resilience, connection, and hope, with a focus on analysing effective feminist tactics and strategies used by WHRDs, as well as the impact and outcomes these strategies generate.

Provides concrete, detailed, and stakeholder-specific recommendations—at international, regional, and local levels—on how WHRDs and their work can be better protected, supported, and funded.

The Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA) is a civil society coalition bringing together grassroots women’s rights organizations from Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, Somaliland, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, and Uganda.
OBJECTIVES OF THE CONSULTANCY
This consultancy aims to produce research product which explores any emerging topic reflecting on a specific manner in which current gender backlash or the anti-rights movement against women and girls is manifesting and impacting women and girls. This could be focused on a specific country in the GHoA or on the region as a whole. In this regard, the possible research product may look at themes related to culture, religion, the regression of legal or institutional protections for women and girls, the interference of foreign actors, the reduced funding for women rights organizations, or any other emerging and novel topic of choice. From the theme and topic selected, the research product must examine the lived experiences of women and girls impacted and best practices in how feminist, women’s rights activists, organizations and coalitions have taken a stand against the form of backlash/ the anti-rights movement. The research product should also map out recommendations and tangible advocacy strategies in lobbying against the specific manifestation of gender backlash or the anti-gender movement examined, towards overall better gender equality outcomes for women and girls. Importantly, the researcher selected will have the flexibility to develop any research product of choice, whether it is a policy paper, a zine, infographics, a documentary or any other form of storytelling using different forms of multi-media.
KEY COMPETENCES AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in conducting research on the anti-gender rights movement and gender backlash in any country in the GHoA or regionally. Preference will be given to emerging or early career feminist researchers between the ages of 18 – 35 years old.
- In-depth knowledge and understanding of the socio-economic, political and legal context of the country selected to research on/ the GHoA region, particularly the dynamics of violence and its impact on women and girls. Familiarity with the cultural nuances and gender norms prevalent is crucial for contextualizing research product findings accurately.
- Ability to conduct gender-sensitive analysis and intersectional assessments, considering factors such as age, ethnicity, socio-economic status, and disability. The candidate should be adept at integrating a gender perspective into research product design, data collection, and analysis to uncover gender disparities and vulnerabilities.
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to articulate complex research findings clearly and concisely. Proficiency in presentation skills is necessary for effectively communicating research product outcomes to diverse stakeholders, including policymakers, practitioners, and community members.
- Commitment to upholding ethical standards in research, including obtaining informed consent, ensuring confidentiality and anonymity, and prioritizing the well-being of research product participants. Gender-based violence (GBV)Background
The Global Survivors Fund (GSF) was founded in October 2019 by Dr Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad, 2018 Nobel Peace Prize laureates. Its mission is to enhance access to reparations for survivors of conflict-related sexual violence worldwide, addressing a long-standing gap identified by survivors. GSF provides interim reparative measures in situations where states or other parties are unable or unwilling to meet their responsibilities. It also advocates for dutybearers and the international community to develop reparations programmes, while guiding states and civil society by offering expertise and technical support in designing such initiatives. GSF’s survivor-centric approach is the cornerstone of its work.
Context and objectives of the consultancy
The Asset Recovery for Justice Working Group (ARJWG) is a Syrian-led, survivor-centred, and internationally supported platform convened to develop practical, policy-oriented recommendations on financing reparations, including through asset recovery and repurposing. It brings together Syrian survivor- and victim-led organisations, civil society, government representatives, and international experts. The group’s primary focus is to identify viable financing pathways for reparations and produce survivor-informed recommendations that can guide Syrian and international policymaking. The consultant will serve as group facilitator. They will build consensus across diverse stakeholders and deliver concrete outputs in line with the working group’s mandate. The consultant will support both the ARJWG and the Secretariat (Global Survivors Fund.)
Consultancy requirements
• Minimum 5 years’ experience in transitional justice, reparations, human rights, anticorruption/asset recovery, rule of law or public policy in conflict / post-conflict settings in Syria; • Proven experience convening and facilitating multi-stakeholder working groups or coalitions (government, civil society, international actors);
• Experience designing and facilitating participatory consultations with survivors, including survivors of detention, torture and conflict-related sexual violence;
• Strong track record in drafting analytical and policy documents (roadmaps, technical papers, recommendations, policy briefs).
• Strong organisational skills, including reliable follow-up on actions and ability to meet tight deadlines.
• Fluency in Arabic (spoken and written) and very good command of English (including written English);
• Based in Damascus, Syria and able to travel to other regions in the country;
• High integrity, discretion and sound judgement when dealing with sensitive information and politically complex issues.

REPONSIBILITIES: Under the direct supervision of Head, SheTrades Initiative, the Advisor will be responsible for the following duties:
• Works with key clients to facilitate the development, implementation and evaluation of assigned programmes/projects, including activities related to mainstreaming gender inclusion and addressing participation barriers in Uganda’s Creative and Cultural Industries (CCI) sector; monitors and analyzes specific aspects of programme/project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and recommends corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; identifies and tracks follow-up actions.
• Carries out basic research on selected aspects of programmes, operations and other activities, including emerging gender trends, risks, and structural gaps affecting women and underrepresented groups in the CCI sector; to include collecting, analyzing and presenting statistical data and other information gathered from diverse sources.
• Provides substantive support for policy coordination and evaluation functions, including the review and analysis of gender inclusion issues, participation in evaluations or research activities and studies.
• Assists in performing consulting assignments, in collaboration with the partners, by planning facilitating workshops, through other interactive sessions, ensuring meaningful participation of women, youth and persons with disabilities, and assisting in developing the action plan that support inclusive change processes.
• Participates in survey initiatives; assists with the design of gender-responsive data collection tools; issues data collection tools, reviews, analyzes and interprets responses, identifies problems/issues and prepares preliminary conclusions.
• Contributes to the preparation of various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analytical notes, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications

Qualifications/special skills
A first-level university degree in business administration, management, economics or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with an additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced.
A minimum of two years of experience in project/programme management, administration or related area is required Experience in gender mainstreaming and women’s entrepreneurship. Experience in designing, structuring and implementing activities in trade-related technical assistance projects. Experience working with partners in the public or private sector.
• Professionalism: Knowledge and understanding of theories, concepts and approaches relevant to particular sector, functional area or other specialized field including on gender mainstreaming, women’s entrepreneurship development and value chain development issues.
Ability to identify issues, analyze and participate in the resolution of issues/problems.
