GBV / VAWG
Background Context
Womandla Foundation is implementing the Umfazi Uyafunda project under the Women’s Coalition of Zimbabwe (WCoZ) #ShiftPower initiative. The project aims to strengthen community-led prevention of gender-based violence (GBV) in rural mining communities of Runde Rural District, Zvishavane. It seeks to increase awareness of GBV, women’s rights and available prevention, protection and response mechanisms, while supporting women- and girl-led advocacy and stronger community referral pathways.
The project recognises that legal protections may be difficult to understand when information is presented in technical legal language or is not available in language that community members use confidently.
The project therefore plans to translate and simplify key GBV legislation and related protection provisions into clear, accurate and accessible Shona, and to produce a community-friendly guide and information, education and communication (IEC) materials. The simplified materials are intended to support public legal awareness; they will not replace the official legislation or constitute individual legal advice.
Purpose of the Consultancy
Womandla Foundation seeks to engage a qualified consultant to translate and simplify the Domestic Violence Act and agreed related GBV protection provisions into accessible Shona. The consultant will ensure that the material is legally faithful, culturally appropriate, survivor-centred, easy to understand and suitable for use by women and girls, Community GBV Champions, community leaders and other residents in rural mining communities.
Objectives
• Produce a clear and accurate Shona version of agreed GBV legal information, including the Domestic Violence Act and related protection provisions identified with Womandla Foundation.
• Explain key legal concepts, rights, protections and available options in plain, community-friendly language without changing the meaning of the law.
• Develop a practical, accessible legal-awareness guide and concise content suitable for pamphlets, posters and community advocacy.
• Validate the draft materials with relevant stakeholders and revise them in response to technical and community feedback.
Required Qualifications and Experience
• Demonstrated professional fluency in both Shona and English, including excellent written Shona.
• Relevant qualification or experience in translation, language studies, law, human rights, gender studies, social development or a related field.
• Proven experience translating or simplifying legal, policy, human-rights or public-information materials into plain language
