About Girl Rising
Girl Rising is a global nonprofit with a founding conviction: stories change things. For sixteen years, we have used the power of storytelling to change the way the world values girls and their education — shifting attitudes, driving policy change, and deeply engaging girls and boys, teachers and parents in communities where girls face the greatest barriers. Together with local partners across Africa, Asia, and Latin America, we equip girls with the skills, support, and opportunities to shape their own futures. In 2025, Girl Rising merged with She's the First, deepening our reach across India, Kenya, Guatemala, and the US. We believe every girl, everywhere, deserves to be educated, respected and heard.
About Unmuted
Unmuted is a global storytelling challenge launching in October 2026 on International Day of the Girl (IDG) that invites young people ages 14–25, and the teachers and mentors around them, to share the stories that have shaped who they are and the futures they are building. Submissions can be in any format, from any place: filmed, spoken, written, drawn. The challenge will be open from International Day of the Girl through the end of the year. We will have a youth panel that curates the stories, and a final judging panel that will identify spotlight stories within different categories. Cash and technology prizes will be given to the creators of these spotlight stories and Girl Rising will share them between International Women’s Day (in March) and IDG in Oct 2027. Unmuted builds on the success of Girl Rising's 2020 storytelling challenge, which drew more than 800 submissions from 50+ countries. This iteration goes further: the strongest submissions will be developed into a short documentary film in partnership with a major hollywood production company. The film will premiere at International Day of the Girl 2027
The Role
This is a rare and exciting freelance role that sits at the intersection of global storytelling, creative production, and social impact. We are looking for someone who is equally comfortable managing a complex operational challenge and developing a strong creative instinct for what makes a good story.
Qualifications Required
• 5+ years of experience in film, documentary, or video production, with a track record of managing complex productions from development through delivery
• Exceptional project management skills: you hold multiple workstreams, anticipate problems before they become crises, and close loops reliably
• A keen sense of story: you know what makes a submission worth developing further, and you can articulate why
• Experience working across cultures and time zones, with demonstrated ability to build trust with diverse stakeholders
• Proven ability to manage corporate partners and funder relationships at a senior level
• Excellent written and verbal communication in English; additional language skills strongly preferred (Hindi, Swahili, or Spanish particularly valued)
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced, lean nonprofit environment where resourcefulness matters
