About Girls First Initiative
Girls First Initiative (GFI) is a locally-led, women-driven organization based in Tanzania, committed to breaking the cycle of poverty by investing in the education, health, and economic empowerment of adolescent girls and young women in underserved communities. Through three programme pillars — Her Education, Her Health, and Her Economy — GFI has reached over 30,000 girls and young women across 21 schools in five regions, including Tanga.
Position Summary
GFI is seeking a motivated and community-oriented Project Officer to lead the day-to-day implementation of GFI's programmes in Tanga Region. The Project Officer will coordinate activities across the Her Education, Her Health, and Her Economy pillars, working closely with schools, local leaders, caregivers, and community volunteers to ensure programmes are delivered effectively and reach the girls and young women who need them most.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Community Development, Education, Public Health, or a related field.
- At least 2 years of experience implementing community-based programmes, preferably focused on girls, gender, education, or health.
- Strong understanding of the local context, culture, and communities in Tanga Region.
- Experience working with schools, local government structures, and community leaders.
- Good record-keeping and basic reporting skills.
- Fluency in Kiswahili required; working knowledge of English preferred.
- Willingness to travel regularly within Tanga districts, including to rural and hard-to-reach areas.
- A strong commitment to girls' and young women's rights, gender equality, and safeguarding principles.
