Background:

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

UN Women’s efforts are guided by its commitment to the empowerment of women and girls through an intersectional approach. Therefore, a subject matter expert is required to facilitate a two-day regional meeting and provide substantive expertise on gender equality, women's rights, personal status laws and family law reform across the Arab States region.

The consultant will work under the guidance and direct supervision of UN Women’s Regional Governance Adviser, in close collaboration with the Programme Specialist and colleagues from ROAS, UN Women Headquarters, and relevant Country Offices. The consultant will also coordinate closely with the Operations Team and other relevant units and engage with key partners and stakeholders as required.

The consultant will report to the Regional Governance and Leadership Advisor and will be supported by the Programme Specialist, who will be the point of contact on the contract and payment issues.

Description of Responsibilities/ Scope of Work:

The consultant will facilitate a two-day regional meeting and provide substantive expertise on gender equality, personal status laws and family law reform.

Scope of Work

• Review background materials and agenda;
• Facilitate all sessions and discussions;
• Guide dialogue on gender equality, personal status laws and family law reform;
• Moderate plenaries and breakout groups;
• Prepare a summary report with recommendations.

Consultant’s Workplace and Official Travel:

This is an office-based consultancy

As part of this assignment, there will be 3 days of travel required

Required Qualifications:

Education and Certification:
  • Master’s degree in the fields of Law, Gender Studies, Human Rights, Political Science and/or related fields is required;
  • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:
  • At least 2 years of professional international/national experience on gender equality, women's rights and legal reform and/or related fields are required;
  • Experience in facilitating high-level regional consultations is required;
  • Demonstrated expertise in personal status and family laws across the Arab States region is required;
  • Academic, research or legal scholarship experience is desirable.

Languages:
  • Fluency in English is required;
  • Knowledge of Arabic is desirable.
