About GRIT and this role
GRIT is a feminist technology organisation that builds community-co-created Al to advance gender rights, safety and justice. We are building a dedicated, women-of-colour-led feminist-tech team. The Al Technical Lead is the senior technical role at the centre of that move — owning what we build, how we build it, and how we measure whether it actually helps. The vision is to grow this technical team into both a pipeline for young African women in Al and a sustainable income stream for GRIT. This is a feminist-tech role. In addition to investment in the technology, we are looking for excitement about the team, data practice, and metrics tracking how we support those we serve. We are excited to hire a technical leader who embodies GRIT’s feminist, Afrocentric and co-creation values.
Purpose
To lead the technical build, deployment and continuous improvement of GRIT’s feminist Al products - primarily (1) scaling Zuzi, our multilingual WhatsApp companion (RAG across 11+ South African languages plus Shona), towards 50,000 monthly interactions and beyond and (2) building inFORMed, GRIT’s new Gen-Al tool that completes protection-order forms, from the ground up. This looks like embedding feminist and Afrocentric principles into both the design and the measurement of impact, grounding everything in community co-creation, keeping GRIT at the frontier of Al, and growing a team and a fellowship-and-services model that serves young African women and generates income for the organisation.
