MAMA Network
About MAMA Network
Mobilizing Activists around the Medical Abortion Network (MAMA) is a regional collaboration of grassroots activists and feminist groups across Sub-Saharan Africa working to expand access to safe medical abortion.
MAMA shares evidence-based, stigma-free information on self-managed medical abortion and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) directly with women at the community level. The network currently includes 74 member groups in 24 African countries, with plans to expand and deepen its impact.
Members include feminist activists, trained counselors, and researchers committed to supporting safe abortion access, particularly in contexts where abortion is restricted by laws, stigma, or limited healthcare access.
Key strategies include:
  • Information hotlines
  • Community outreach
  • Collaboration with pharmacies and healthcare providers
  • Advocacy for abortion decriminalisation
  • Partnerships with global feminist organizations
