Background:
UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
Description of Responsibilities/ key tasks
- Support implementation of UN Women and government response plans and strategies.
- Coordinate and strengthen the work of Gender in Humanitarian Working Group (GIHA), its plans and strategies.
- Participates in relevant cluster meetings, HCTs to lobby and support gender mainstreaming efforts.
- Strengthen capacities on gender in humanitarian action for key stakeholders including but not limited to, UN Women staff, government, humanitarian stakeholders and WLOs.
- Participate and contribute to inter-agency activities including assessments, development of plans, missions and prepares briefings and reports to senior management team.
- Review and strengthen the integration of gender in key humanitarian plans such as HNRP, floods response framework and cluster response plans at national and sub-national levels
- Coordinate the collection and dissemination of gender analysis, relevant gender data to inform programming and advocacy efforts including preparation of monthly gender alerts of flash updates.
- Strengthen partnerships and resource mobilization efforts with key stakeholders including WLOs
- Document and share key knowledge products including lessons learnt and best practices emerging from the current floods’ response
- Prepare a policy advocacy brief that draws on insights from emergency response, highlighting challenges, gaps, and opportunities to strengthen gender considerations in humanitarian work, in order to support resource mobilization initiatives.
Functional Competencies:
- In-depth knowledge of gender equality, humanitarian action, conflict and disaster risk management.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct gender analysis produce clear reports and guidance with in-depth analysis and strategic recommendations
- Ability to facilitate workshop workshops/learning sessions using a variety of pedagogical approaches.
- Experience in coordination, good communication and interpersonal skills, ability to foster networks and partnerships.
- Ability to complete complex assignments in a timely manner and delivery quality results.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in the field of, Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Risk Management, Conflict Management, Social Sciences, Gender Equality, Program Management, or a closely related field.
- A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
- At least 5 years of experience preferably in humanitarian emergencies, Disaster Risk Management, Conflict Prevention and Gender issues.
- Experience in undertaking research on humanitarian programming initiatives that target women and youth in humanitarian and in complex and fragile contexts.
- Experience in design and delivery of training modules that target diverse audiences.
- Knowledge of policies and legal frameworks on gender equality, Disaster and Humanitarian crisis.
- Experience in communication, documentation and reporting.
- Fluency in English and Portuguese is required.
