medica mondiale e.V. (mm) is a non-governmental organisation based in Cologne, Germany. Since 2015, medica mondiale has been implementing programmes and projects in the Kurdistan Region, focusing on strengthening local protection and counselling for women and girls affected by violence as well as strengthening the health sector support for survivors of violence. As a women’s rights and aid organisation, medica mondiale supports women and girls in war and crisis zones throughout the world. In collaboration with local and national partners (including organisations, Directorate of Health, and Directorate of Combating Violence Against Women and Family in Duhok), medica mondiale offers holistic support to survivors of violence to access trauma sensitive medical care. On the political level, the organisation proactively promotes women’s rights, calls for a rigorous punishment of crimes as well as effective protection, justice and political participation of survivors of violence. Currently medica mondiale is working in four regions, Afghanistan and Kurdistan Region, West Africa Southeast Europe, and the African Great Lakes Region.
medica mondiale in the Autonomous Region of Kurdistan Iraq (KRI)
Through its KRI Regional Office, medica mondiale is active in KRI since 2015 and implements qualification programmes for medical and psychological expert staff in psychosocial advice centres, psychological first aid and mental health. medica mondiale cooperated with the local health authorities. In the course of the Transnational Health Training Programme funded by the BMZ (10.2018-06.2022). the organisation continues to collaborate with local health authorities in the second phase of the same project (2022 – 2025). As part of these partnerships, medica mondiale set up a national steering committee which includes leading public health institutions and NGOs in the province of Dohuk. The steering committee plans for the improvement of stress- and trauma-sensitive healthcare for survivors of sexualised violence in the host community and refugee communities. Furthermore, a national advocacy strategy was developed by members of the steering committee and women survivors from the Yazidi community. This advocacy strategy aims at influencing change at the regional level in the KRI.
Background on the Transnational Health Training and Advocacy Programme (THTP):
The Transnational Health Training and Advocacy Programme, funded by the BMZ, is implemented in cooperation with local organisations that have been partner organisations of the German project management organisation for many years: in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) by Medica Zenica (MZ), and in Kosovo by Medica Gjakova (MGJ). In the Kurdistan Region-Iraq, medica mondiale is currently implementing the project through the regional office in Dohuk, in partnership with the Directorate of Health (DOH) in Duhok Governorate.
