WHO WE ARE
The mission of The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is to conserve the lands and waters upon which all life depends. As a science-based organization, we develop innovative, on-the-ground solutions to the world's toughest environmental challenges so that people and nature can thrive.
WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER
In alignment with our mission, we are excited to announce a vital opportunity within our organization: the Guatemala Gender, Safeguards and Social Inclusion Specialist (GSSS). This role is crucial for integrating social and environmental safeguards into our conservation projects, particularly focusing on the Selva Maya-Mesoamerican Reef region, specifically, to the successful implementation of the "Guatemala's Critical Forest Biomes: Ensuring Benefits for the Well-being of Local Communities and the Ecosystems of the Maya Forest" project, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) through the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which aims to protect critical ecosystems in Guatemala, focusing on the Selva Maya. In this region, the project will implement actions to restore degraded forest lands and enhance conservation practices. By working closely with local communities, the project aims to improve the well-being of residents while ensuring the sustainable management of natural resources, particularly forest and water.
By emphasizing the importance of the Selva Maya, the project highlights the need for coordinated efforts to protect this critical region and support the livelihoods of local communities. The GSSS will play a key role in driving these efforts, ensuring that conservation practices are inclusive, equitable, and sensitive to the perspectives and opinions of the communities involved.
TNC has been working in Guatemala since the mid-1980s, with over 30 years of experience in conservation and sustainable development. Our efforts have focused on conserving the remaining forests, restoring degraded landscapes, and promoting sustainable management models for natural resources. The GSSS will ensure that gender considerations are embedded in all conservation efforts, promoting gender equality and empowering women, rural youth and marginalized groups within local communities.
