The Center on Gender Equity and Health at the University of California, San Diego (GEH) is an actionoriented collective of researchers, policy specialists, and development experts working to eliminate gender inequities through impactful research, intervention testing, and capacity building and bridging. For a prospective project, we are seeking an expert Nigeria-based Senior Researcher with a mixedmethods background, and strong qualitative experience, and ideally experience conducting research in the digital space.
Responsibilities
• Co-lead the design of the research approach, including participating in research design workshops, discussions, and meetings with key stakeholders to shape the approach
• Co-lead the development of the final research protocol and tools
• Lead the submission to Nigerian ethics review boards (national and state-level), and ensure t imely review and approval is achieved within means
• If applicable, recruit and manage junior level researchers for data collection; or collaborate effectively with an identified research firm to oversee data collection and quality assurance
• Lead data collector and ethics trainings, with a key focus on qualitative ethnographic approaches and digital monitoring
• Oversee and ensure quality implementation of all data collection activities, including a mix of approaches which may be rapid online and community ethnographic social network mapping, focus group discussions, in-depth case studies, rapid phone surveys
• Co-lead development of the data analysis plan, supervise coding and analysis, and synthesize f indings into actionable insights on an iterative timeline for funder and/or implementer uptake
• Support the drafting of research briefs and peer-reviewed publications, and present findings to diverse audiences including donor and implementing partners
• Serve as a key thought partner to GEH, contributing to strategy development, adaptive research design, and cross-workstream integration
• Ensure culturally sensitive, ethical, and high-quality research practices
Qualifications
• PhD or equivalent advanced degree in public health, social sciences, anthropology, or a related f ield, with a strong mixed-methods background
• Minimum 10 years of applied research experience, including significant leadership in designing and managing qualitative and/or mixed-methods studies
• Demonstrated expertise in gender, social norms, male engagement, or reproductive health in Nigeria or comparable settings
• Experience designing and conducting community-based research, including qualitative methods such as in-depth interviews, FGDs, ethnography, and participatory approaches
• Familiarity with digital or media-based research approaches, or willingness to learn
• Strong data analysis skills (e.g., NVivo, Dedoose, or equivalent), and demonstrated ability to translate findings into actionable programmatic insights
• Excellent communication and writing skills, including experience with policy briefs, donor reports, and publications
• Collaborative and adaptive approach, with experience working with international teams and across sectors
• Based in Nigeria with willingness to travel within the country for fieldwork and stakeholder engagement
