Background & Context

Girls Not Brides: The Global Partnership to End Child Marriage is seeking a dynamic and creative Communications Consultant to support our Africa Team in advancing strategic communications initiatives. This short-term, non-staff role, will be pivotal in amplifying the work of our member organisations, positioning child marriage as a key advocacy issue, and enhancing media and stakeholder engagement across the region.

We are looking for someone with a strong storytelling instinct, media savvy, and a passion for social impact to help elevate the visibility of our work in Africa through digital and media channels.

Objectives of the Consultancy

Working closely with our Africa Team and Communication Team, the consultant will support efforts to elevate the visibility of our work in Africa, create compelling content, and strengthen engagement with media and other key stakeholders.

Scope of Work and Key Deliverables

The consultant will support the development and execution of communications activities aligned with Girls Not Brides’ strategic objectives in Africa. Key deliverables will include:
  • Develop and implement a short-term communications plan to support regional and national advocacy priorities.
  • Create compelling digital content (e.g. stories, social media posts, short videos, blog articles) showcasing the impact of Girls Not Brides member organisations across Africa.
  • Support media engagement efforts, including drafting press releases, pitching stories, and identifying media opportunities to highlight key issues and events.
  • Develop communication materials and messaging aligned with regional advocacy campaigns and events.
  • Monitor and analyse media coverage and digital engagement related to child marriage in the region.
  • Support strategic storytelling that centers the voices and experiences of girls and grassroots partners.
  • Provide technical input to the Africa Team on communication activities for key national and regional initiatives.

Required Qualifications & Experience

We are looking for a consultant who brings:
  • Proven experience in communications, journalism, or advocacy, ideally in the field of international development, human rights, or gender equality.
  • Strong writing and storytelling skills, with the ability to craft compelling narratives for different audiences and channels.
  • Demonstrated experience in digital content creation and social media strategy, particularly in African contexts.
  • Experience engaging with media and knowledge of the African media landscape.
  • Familiarity with gender and social impact movements and a commitment to feminist principles.
  • Ability to work independently, deliver high-quality outputs on tight timelines, and collaborate effectively with diverse teams.
  • Fluency in English is required; French is an asset.
