The Course Tutor provides teaching on Sociology courses at postgraduate level and as part of the BSc in Sociology programme. Teaching will involve lectures, seminars and class teaching, working as part of the wider teaching team. The Course Tutor will act as an academic mentor, undertake marking, and provide supervision of individual dissertation projects.
Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching
• Contributing to the scholarship and intellectual life of the School by conducting teaching which will enhance the School’s high reputation as a research-led teaching institution.
• Acting as module leader on specialist modules within the research domain of the teacher, taking overall responsibility for the delivery of the module. Such modules would not normally have more than two class groups.
• Developing course proposals, shaping and influencing curriculum development and innovations in teaching practice.
Course Administration
• To accept overall administrative and pastoral responsibility for undergraduate and/or master's students while they are registered in the Department.
• To contribute to orientation arrangements for master's and undergraduate students.
• To oversee the course registration process and work to resolve any matters arising.
Scholarship
• Engaging in subject, professional and pedagogy research as required to support teaching activities.
• Extending, transforming, and applying knowledge acquired from external activities to teaching.
• Conducting individual or scholarly projects.
Activities relating to departmental administration and management and/or School wide service.
• Playing a pro-active role in student recruitment/widening participation initiatives.
• Fostering departmental collegiality and fulfilling obligations to the Head of Department and colleagues.
• Playing a constructive role in the life of the department/contributing to the work of the School overall – through attendance at departmental meetings, membership of departmental and School committees etc.

A completed PhD in Sociology or relevant social science field by the start of the post
Research interests in the social analysis of cultural processes, and in the sociology of gender and sexuality
A developing record of publications in refereed journals in the areas of the social analysis of cultural processes and the sociology of gender and sexuality
Experience of teaching in the social analysis of cultural processes, and the sociology of gender and sexuality
Ability to communicate effectively E Experience of programme and/or course management and administration
Experience in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level E Ability and willingness to work as part of a team under the guidance of the Head of Department
An ability to relate their specialist work to the context of a Sociology Department within a social science institution
