Mentor Role Description

This is an exciting role where you will have the opportunity to share your experience and skills with a girl in a way that helps support her needs. This role involves regular contact with children and is considered a ‘regulated activity’. As such, mentors are expected to adhere to our safeguarding policies and procedures to ensure a safe environment for all. Those who volunteer as mentors will be supported throughout their journey by other mentors, their network manager and Ugenie, our online platform where you can access various resources for each session and connect with other mentors nationally.

What are we looking for in our mentors?

We are looking for women who can demonstrate our core values– excellence, commitment, collaboration, courage and sincerity– and who always put the needs of their mentee at the centre of the mentoring relationship. A great mentor values the opinion of her mentee, listens attentively and actively, provides guidance and constructive feedback and values ongoing learning. The programme is just as rewarding for the mentor as it is for the mentee. We are looking for mentors who demonstrate a positive attitude and will act as a positive role model. Our goal is that all our mentors will actively engage in our programme or network for at least two consecutive years and will act professionally as advocates for TheGirls’ Network. There are several ways to get involved outside the mentoring programme itself. We are looking for mentors who embrace and value diversity. The Girls’ Network is committed to diversity and inclusion. We encourage all who self-identify as women to apply to join our network of mentors. The society we live and work in by creating a diverse pool of mentors. We strongly believe that you can’t be what you can’t see. By providing the young women in our network with access to diverse opportunities, people, professions and perspectives, they can make better-informed decisions and ambitious choices when it comes to their futures.

● Prepare for mentoring sessions ahead of time (we have a full suite of resources that can be used month by month).
● Meet monthly with your mentee to provide them with guidance and support.
● Complete session reflections within 48 hours of finishing a session.
● Report any safeguarding concerns you have, should any arise.
● Attend any necessary training sessions facilitated by The Girls’ Network.
● To adhere to our safeguarding policy, procedures and code of conduct at all times. Locations: Birmingham, London, Merseyside, Portsmouth, Southampton, Sussex, Tees Valley and Tyne & Wear

Requirements:
● Two professional references
● At least 3 years of work experience
● Lived in the UK for the past 5 consecutive years (to ensure we can facilitate a satisfactory enhanced DBS check). Please note that this requirement does not apply to partner applications, as your workplace will provide any necessary additional documentation.
