Uthabiti Africa Foundation (herein referred to as Uthabiti Africa) is the feminist non-profit dedicated to accelerating access to quality, affordable childcare for all in Africa. With a bold goal to impact 100,000 childcare workers and 10 million children by 2030, Uthabiti Africa focuses on strengthening childcare ecosystems, driving policy reforms, convening and making childcare work fulfilling and dignifying for millions of childcare workers on the continent

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

1. Inception Phase 
• Review global, African and country-specific secondary data (published and grey literature) on childcare workers 
• Develop a research framework, methodology, work plan, and data collection tools. 
• Organize and lead an inception meeting with key stakeholders, including WUSC, COVAW, and WOLREC. 

2. Data Collection 
• Design and administer structured surveys targeting childcare workers in selected counties in Kenya and Malawi. 
• Conduct focus group discussions (FGDs) with workers and key informant interviews (KIIs) with stakeholders, such as government representatives, childcare center owners, and advocacy organizations. 

3. Data Analysis 
• Analyze data using a gender-responsive lens to identify disparities, systemic gaps, and the well-being of the workforce. 

4. Policy Review and Benchmarking 
• Review existing childcare and care-related policies in Kenya and Malawi, benchmarking against global best practices for gender equity and workforce well-being. 

5. Reporting • Prepare a comprehensive report on the research findings,  
• Prepare a draft the 2nd Status of Female Childcare Workers in Kenya and Malawi Report 2025. This will include evidence-based recommendations for policy and social norms reforms. This will include 

6. Stakeholder Engagement and Dissemination 
• Organize validation workshops to present findings and refine recommendations with childcare workers, policymakers, and partners. 
• Prepare advocacy materials, including policy briefs and user-friendly infographics. 

Expected Deliverables 
• Inception report and data collection tools. 
• Comprehensive report with findings and recommendations. 
• Policy briefs and outreach materials, including infographics. 
• Stakeholder engagement and validation reports. 

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS 
• Postgraduate degree in Social Sciences, Gender Studies, Development Studies, Public Policy, or a related discipline. 
• Proven experience in conducting gender-responsive research on labor, childcare, or social issues. 
• Strong quantitative and qualitative research skills, including survey design, data collection, and analysis. 
• Familiarity with gender dynamics, social norms, and challenges faced by women in the workforce. 
• Experience in developing evidence-based policy recommendations for gender-responsive reforms. 
• In-depth understanding of the childcare sector or workforce development in Kenya and/or Malawi. 
• Proficiency in research tools and software (e.g., SPSS, STATA, NVivo). 
• Strong report-writing and presentation skills.
