Anti-gender/ Anti-rights pushback
The Asfari Institute is looking for a Research Consultant to conduct in-depth research on the backlash against anti-rights movements and feminist responses in Jordan, employing both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The aim of the research is to explore the factors fueling the anti-rights backlash in Jordan and explore the feminist movement’s pushback strategy against this backdrop. The consultant will be responsible for designing research plans, analyzing socio-political contexts, collecting data, and producing reports and policy briefs with actionable recommendations.
Candidates must have a demonstrable commitment to gender equality and social justice. Candidates must also be independent, enthusiastic, and hardworking.
Responsibilities:
- Research Design and Implementation: (1) Develop a detailed research plan, including methodologies, timelines, and data collection techniques, to explore the backlash against anti-rights movements and feminist responses in Jordan; (2) Conduct qualitative and/or quantitative research, including interviews, focus groups, and literature reviews, with a focus on intersectional gender analysis.

Contextual Analysis: (1) Analyze the socio-political and cultural context in Jordan, with particular attention to how anti-rights movements manifest and impact feminist and human rights advocacy;
(2) Map the actors, trends, and dynamics driving anti-rights backlash and the feminist strategies employed to counter them. - Data Collection and Management: (1) Gather data from diverse sources, including activists, civil society organizations, academics, and policy documents; (2) Ensure ethical data handling and maintain confidentiality, particularly in politically sensitive contexts.
- Report Writing and Dissemination: (1) Produce high-quality research outputs, including reports, policy briefs, and academic articles, highlighting key findings and actionable recommendations; (2) Present findings to diverse audiences, including stakeholders in Jordan and international advocacy platforms.
Qualifications:
- Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in social sciences, gender studies, political science, sociology, or a related field.
- Proven understanding and application of an intersectional gender lens in research and advocacy work.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in research, particularly in human rights, gender equality, or social justice.
- Previous involvement in advocacy or civil society initiatives in Jordan or the broader MENA region.
- Strong knowledge of Jordan’s socio-politicallandscape, with specific insight into the challenges faced by feminist movements and anti-rights pushback.
- Proficient in designing and conducting qualitative and/or quantitative research.
- Skilled in thematic analysis, policy analysis, and stakeholder mapping.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in Arabic and English.
- Ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including grassroots organizations, academics, and policymakers.
- Demonstrated ability to work sensitively and effectively in politically sensitive and culturally diverse environments.
