Gender-based violence (GBV)
ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND

Women’s Shelters Canada (WSC) brings together 16 provincial and territorial shelter organizations and supports more than 620 shelters across the country for women and children fleeing violence. WSC was created by the provincial and territorial shelter associations who identified a need for a unified voice on the issue of violence against women at the national/federal level. Together, we have become a national, collaborative voice for systemic change with the goal of ending violence against women, children, and gender diverse individuals.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The list below includes the main responsibilities associated to this position. Responsibilities may vary over time according to the ongoing and emerging initiatives of WSC, as well as the skills and interests of the successful candidate.

Research (60%)

  • Collaborating on the design, implementation and analysis of national surveys.
  • Organizing VAW shelter sector consultations and focus groups across the provinces and territories.
  • Working closely with the Research and Policy Manager and external research partners, producing research reports and briefs for the wider public.
  • Conducting literature reviews and environmental scans on relevant topics.
  • Collecting and analyzing data for WSC’s annual Shelter Voices Report.
  • Representing WSC on working groups and liaising with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assisting with funding proposals to further the WSC’s research and policy agenda.
  • Participating in regular research project meetings at WSC.
Policy Analysis (30%)

  • Studying policy and other public policy documents at all levels of government.
  • Conducting and/or identifying existing research knowledge to inform policy and practise.
  • Assisting on the research and advocacy work of the National Action Plan on Gender Based Violence.
  • Facilitating meetings and working groups, to support data gathering and synthesis of policy related material.
Knowledge Mobilization (10%)

  • Working with the Knowledge Exchange and Communications Teams to break down research into summaries, infographics, and fact sheets.
  • Providing knowledge sharing and translation among the WSC team.
  • Presenting research findings both preliminary and conclusive at conferences and other events.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Education:

  • A completed Master’s degree or PhD in Social Sciences, Gender Studies, Sociology, Social Work, Public Policy, Legal Studies, or a related discipline, ideally with knowledge of gender-based violence and violence against women.
  • Candidates who are currently completing a doctoral degree will be considered.
Experience:

  • Knowledge and experience with community-based research.
  • Knowledge and experience with intersectional feminist critical research.
  • Strong academic writing skills and experience conducting literature reviews and/or technical reports.
  • Ability to analyze information, summarize findings, and present them in ways that are easily understandable to decision-makers and the general public.
  • Familiarity with the key social and structural issues facing the communities WSC serves (VAW shelters, shelter workers, survivors of GBV, etc.).
Skills:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, including the ability to set priorities, work independently and perform well under pressure.
  • Excellent writing skills for a variety of audiences.
  • Strong language skills (written and spoken) in either English or French and capacity to read and communicate in the other language.
