The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is seeking a Global Media Coordinator to join its newly established Global Communications team. The role is crucial in enhancing DRC's global presence across various media platforms, including print, broadcast, and digital outlets, while also supporting media relations in DRC's regional offices. The coordinator will leverage strong news judgment skills to strategically respond to international news and proactively secure coverage that positions DRC as a leading humanitarian organization.
Key Responsibilities:
  1. Media Relations: Develop and maintain relationships with key global media outlets, enhancing DRC's external profile as a leading humanitarian organization. The role involves responding swiftly to media inquiries and proactively identifying opportunities to position DRC in the media.
  2. Support Regional Media Efforts: Assist communications teams across DRC's country and regional offices in promoting the organization’s work and key issues. This includes developing media messaging, creating content, and providing media handling advice.
  3. Capacity Building: Enhance the media outreach capabilities of regional and country offices by offering technical advice, guidance, and coaching. This ensures that media outreach efforts are effective at both global and local levels.
  4. Content Production: Create high-quality media content, including interviewing case studies, organizing photography, and ghostwriting blogs or op-eds. The role also involves developing innovative media packages for various platforms and ensuring content is effectively used across DRC’s channels.
  5. Strategy Development: Formulate and evaluate media and communication strategies that raise DRC’s profile and support its fundraising, policy, advocacy, and influencing campaigns.
  6. Crisis Response: Quickly respond to international news stories, drafting spokesperson quotes, press releases, and social media posts, and coordinating approvals to position DRC as a key humanitarian organization.
  7. Training and Support: Provide briefings and training to DRC spokespeople, ensuring they are well-prepared for media engagements. Maintain an up-to-date list of experts and spokespeople across DRC's key operational areas.
  8. Collaboration: Work closely with media and communications leads across DRC, participating in collaborative teams and contributing to cross-organizational initiatives.
Candidate Profile:
The ideal candidate will have experience in a busy news/media organization or a PR/media relations team, with a proven track record of developing and placing media stories. Excellent verbal and writing skills in English are essential, along with the ability to adapt writing styles for different audiences. The role requires a strong understanding of global media outlets, and the ability to build productive relationships with journalists.
The candidate must be flexible, able to work under pressure, and possess strong organizational skills. They should be able to work independently while also thriving in a team environment. Knowledge of humanitarian and development issues is crucial, as is an understanding of ethical storytelling and safeguarding in media work.
