About Sonke

Founded in 2006, Sonke is a women’s rights organisation that is committed to feminist principles, using a rights-based and gender transformative approach to achieve human rights and gender justice. 


Key duties and responsibilities
Coordination, implementation and reporting

  • Lead with the planning and implementation of projects activities. Centre.
  • Coordinate activities and support the Program Specialist in all implementation plans.
  • Contribute to the unit’s monthly program reports.
  • Contribute to the writing up of donor reports.
  • Present reports defining project progress, problems, and solutions.
  • Project evaluation and assessment of results.

Development and provision of IEC materials


  • Assist the Programmes Specialist to develop and provide IEC materials.
  • Distribute materials in accordance with the work plan.
  • Provide the project staff and partners with the materials and resources to execute their tasks efficiently.

Capacity development and monitoring


  • Provide training and mentoring in the identified areas on the implementation of Sonke content and model.
  • Facilitate the definition of project scope, goals, and deliverables.
  • Assemble and co-ordinate project staff.
  • Track team deliverable using appropriate tools.
  • Provide direction and support to project teams.

Community mobilisation and network building

  • Support the trainers and Community Action Teams on implementing Sonke’s community mobilising strategies.
  • Strengthen partnerships with key stakeholders (MSATs, health care workers, police, educators/school, faith leaders, local government/ward councilor’s).
  • Conduct and host quarterly partner meetings.

Provision and distribution of training materials


  • Provide training materials, condoms, IEC materials and other promotional materials to Community Action Teams and Community Based Organizations.
  • Track the success of the interventions and the distribution of materials undertaken by identifying and providing training and mentoring to Community Action Teams in identified areas on the implementation of the Sonke model approaches. These approaches include mass mobilization, ambush theatre, street soccer, digital storytelling, community radio talk shows and others. Facilitate all bi-monthly Community Action Teams and monthly community activities.

Monitoring and evaluation

  • Monitor and evaluate project success and compliance with deliverables.
  • Facilitate a smooth exit from the target area at the end of the project period.

Administration

  • Ensure that you are familiar with Finance, Administration and Procurement procedures and ensure that these are consistently adhered to.
  • Ensure requisitions, quotations and payments are prepared in line with the payments processes.
  • Ensure that all M&E are correctly completed and submitted timeously.
  • Attending all staff meetings, staff retreats, staff trainings and international meetings as required.

Qualifications and experience


  • Matric and a University Degree in Social Sciences with a strong preference for Public Health or Human Rights.
  • A minimum of 3 to 5 years’ experience of working in a complex human rights & public health environment.
  • Extensive knowledge on Community Development and Engagement and a track record of community mobilisation.
  • Expertise in any of the following areas will be of benefit: HIV prevention, gender equality, gender-based violence, sexual and reproductive health and rights, democracy, elections and governance; peace and conflict; fatherhood, human rights.
  • Experience in project supervision, donor reporting and time management, presentation skills.
