The Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR) is a non-governmental organisation which envisions societies that are peaceful, equal and free from violence. CSVR aims to understand and prevent violence, heal its effects and build sustainable peace at community, national and regional levels. We do this through collaboration with and learning from the lived and diverse experiences of communities affected by violence and conflict to inform innovative interventions, generate knowledge, shape public discourse, influence policy, hold States accountable and promote gender equality, social cohesion and active citizenship.
CSVR seeks to appoint a Senior Gender Officer to be based in its Johannesburg/Cape Town Office. The position will entail a one-year contract, renewable depending on funding. The successful candidate will work as part of the CSVR’s Gender Team.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to developing and implementing CSVR’s Gender strategy at national, continental, and international levels.
- Implement Gender strategy through policy making and implementation, capacity building technical support and raising public awareness.
- Maintain partnerships and network building/social mobilisation.
- Assist in facilitating access to human rights mechanisms.
- Develop gender mainstreaming initiatives for the organisation.
- Support the implementation of gender across the organisation.
- Manage projects and coordinate gender-related projects.
Qualifications
- Honours degree in relevant degree with focus on gender studies, public policy, peace and security, human rights or equivalent.
- At least 3 years’ experience in project management and programmes advancing gender, social justice, peace building, conflict transformation and human rights through advocacy, community organising, social mobilisation, litigation, research or public policy work.
- Demonstrable knowledge of national and continental policy making organs and institutions and human rights mechanisms.
- Knowledge of contemporary South African and continental gender-related, human rights, peace and security and political events.
- Good knowledge and understanding of national and international legal and policy instruments on gender and women’s rights.
- Good knowledge of SGBV international and local best practices.
- Experience in a non-governmental sector will be an added advantage.
