The Asfari Institute for Civil Society and Citizenship is a research center hosted at the American University of Beirut that bridges academia and activism. Focusing on documenting and analyzing political participation, social movements, and engagement, the Asfari Institute aims to consolidate civil society initiatives locally and regionally in the Arab world.
We are looking for short-term consultants to conduct research for the regional project entitled “Gender Political Analysis of Social Protection in the MENA Region“. The project aims to understand the intersection of gender, politics, and social protection systems in MENA countries. The project addresses the feminization of poverty, women’s roles in political economies, the impact of conflicts and security threats, the informal sector, care provision and unpaid work, taxation systems, and the role of civil society in advocating for social protection policies.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct Detailed Research and Analysis
- Participate in Workshops and Regular Meetings of the Advisory Board
- Conduct Data Collection, Desk Reviews, and Primary Research
- Prepare and Present Findings in Various Formats
- Collaborate with Civil Society Actors
- Develop Tools and Strategies for Social Activism
- Work Collaboratively within a Diverse Team

Qualifications:
- A master’s degree in gender studies, political science, sociology, international development, or a related field.
- Demonstrated expertise in gender analysis, particularly in the context of social protection policies and political economies. Strong understanding of feminist theory and methodologies is essential.
- Proven experience in conducting qualitative research, including data collection, analysis, and report writing. Familiarity with both primary and secondary research methods is preferred.
- In-depth knowledge of the MENA region, including socio-political dynamics, gender issues, and social protection systems. Familiarity with the cultural, economic, and political context is highly desirable.
- Ability to analyze social protection policies and their gender implications, including understanding of political-economic frameworks and their impact on social security status.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Arabic. Ability to present complex ideas and research findings in a clear and accessible manner for diverse audiences.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a diverse team, including researchers, advisors, civil society actors, and stakeholders from different backgrounds.
- Strong commitment to gender equality, social justice, and human rights. Demonstrated interest in advancing the rights and well-being of marginalized communities, including women, refugees, migrant workers, and persons with disabilities.
- Ability to work independently and adapt to changing project needs and priorities. Flexibility to travel within Lebanon and potentially other MENA countries for fieldwork and meetings as required.
