Gender-based violence (GBV)
ABOUT US:
Over one hundred years ago, the Jewish community founded HIAS (originally the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society) in New York City, the immigrant gateway to America. Supporting Jews fleeing persecution and poverty in Eastern Europe, our founders were guided by the traditions, texts and history of the Jewish people—a history of oppression, displacement and diaspora. HIAS has since helped generations of Jews facing violence because of who they were, and HIAS remains committed to helping Jewish refugees anywhere in the world. Today, our clients at HIAS come from diverse faiths, ethnicities and backgrounds, as do our staff. We bring our experience, history and values to our work across five continents, ensuring that refugees today receive the vital services and opportunities they need to thrive.
HIAS seeks a GBV officer who will be tasked with supporting and advancing initiatives within the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) department. The primary objective is to foster inclusive prevention and response programming aimed at mitigating the risks associated with GBV, with a targeted focus on women, adolescents, girls, and LGBTQI+, identified refugees and migrants. This role involves active participation in the development of community awareness campaigns, planning and execution of comprehensive GBV activities, and contributing to facilitating case management services to GBV survivors.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Participate in GBV programming, outreach and community dialogue activities to enhance community response and prevention of violence against women and girls.
- Prepare a monthly analysis on GBV key issues based on case trends to disseminate information on available services and referral pathways.
- Plan and organize awareness campaigns.
- Create and distribute GBV related materials.
- Assist in designing, planning and facilitation of workshops and events, webinar and information nights on GBV.

- Distribute and keep record of Non-Food Items supplies.
- conduct individual case management service for Gender-Based Violence survivors.
- Conduct referrals of vulnerable refugee women and girls to partner agencies and follow up with clients to facilitate access to external services.
- Support other functions of the GBV department as required.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:
- Fluency (written and oral) in Spanish and English. Warao is an advantage.
- University degree in social work, education, administration, law, or related social sciences.
- Current residency in Guyana and/or prior work authorization in Guyana required.
- Experience in development processes and social work, 2 years of experience desired.
