- Act as an important member of our Global Management Team with oversight of our program signatures and advocacy strategies and positions.
- Play a key role in shaping Hivos’ next Strategic Compass (2025 – 2030) centered around climate justice, gender justice and civic rights.
- Constantly scan the external landscape as well as internal experience, and engage with external stakeholders such as donors and allies in order to spot opportunities for Hivos to make a distinctive impact. Work with relevant teams (e.g. Business Development, Global Program Managers or Comms) to translate these into new concepts for flagship programs and/or advocacy initiatives.
- Connect the dots internally to lead and oversee the development of organisation-wide strategic plans for advocacy and programming, applying a feminist lens and grounded in the agency of rightsholders. Support and sign off on the design of large global flagship programs, as well as plans for major global advocacy moments and products.
- Lead the design and rollout of learning material to define the ‘Hivos way’ of achieving system change, integrating people-led solutions locally with movement organising and joint advocacy nationally and globally.
- Ensure that Hivos meaningfully partners with the communities we support on understanding and tackling root causes of injustice, so that we are able to channel local action through to global change.
- Play a key role in building a supportive, coaching culture of inclusion and participation grounded in Hivos’ values.
- Ensure that Hivos is a truly global organisation, reflected not just in its operational presence but also in its power structures and decision making.
- Act as a key external leader for Hivos as appropriate, representing the brand strategically to build support for the our mission across a variety of audiences.
Experience, Knowledge, Abilities, Characteristics
- An empowering leader with an inclusive, collaborative, results-driven approach.
- Experience working at a multi-regional or global level, ideally within at least one of the following spaces: civic rights, LGBTQI+ rights, climate justice, gender justice.
- Knowledge of the donor landscape and a proven track record of developing and winning funding for cutting-edge programs; experience of working closely with business development, private fundraising, and communications teams.
- A demonstrable track record of delivering positive social change through a strategic combination of local rights-based programming and national and international advocacy and campaigning.
- Experience of working effectively with Global South-led movements, networks and organisations.
- An appreciation for the nuances of different geographies and cultures, with experience of living and working in the Global South, and the ability to balance local, regional and global needs.
- Strong personal networks and excellent stakeholder engagement and management skills across a wide variety of audiences from grassroots activists to international funders.
- Experience of shaping corporate strategy, ideally at a key point of change.
- Ability to promote and nurture staff wellbeing in an intense and sometimes highly pressured activist organization.
- Excellent people management skills and experience of building, growing or changing teams.
