ILGA Asia is the Asian Region of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Intersex Association, representing over 200 LGBTIQ-led member organisations across 41 countries in East, South, Southeast, and West Asia. 
Our vision is a world where Asia is a safe place for all, where all can live in freedom and equality, be properly informed in the nature of sexual orientation and gender identity & expression and sex characteristic (SOGIESC) rights, have access to justice, and diversity is respected.

  • To promote universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms, including the elimination of all forms of discrimination and stigmatization based on SOGIESC in Asia and including the specific provisions of the UN conventions and covenants specified in the Constitution of ILGA;

THE ROLE

Evidence-based research is key to ILGA Asia’s mission of eliminating any form of discrimination against LGBTIQ communities. Our research activities are informed by and relevant to our members in Asia as well as to the wider LGBTIQ movement, in-line with ILGA Asia’ Strategic Plan.

The Research Associate will support a range of activities including but not limited to monitoring law and policy developments relating to LGBTIQ rights, drafting of time sensitive research outputs and organizing webinars and other activities to disseminate research findings. The role is suitable for candidates with a strong research experience, particularly focussing on LGBTIQ rights within the Asia region. The candidate will work under the direct supervision of the Senior Research and Policy Officer and will contribute to ongoing research projects at ILGA Asia. 

TASKS
  • To monitor, research, investigate and analyze SOGIESC-related human rights developments in the Asia region 

  • To draft press releases, explainers, policy briefs, full-length reports and other materials for publication and for internal use 

  • To contribute to the development and maintenance of an effective information management system and ensure data from research is well organized and securely stored.

  • To contribute to any administrative duties associated with research projects

  • Other commensurate duties and responsibilities may be assigned by supervisors

REQUIRED SKILLS
  • Master’s degree/postgraduate studies in law, human rights or a related field 

  • Minimum three (3) years of relevant work experience in the field of LGBTIQ rights, or a related field, preferably in the Asia region

  • Demonstrable knowledge of, and experience in, conducting research in the field of human rights, especially LGBTIQ rights and access to justice 

  • Ability to draft press releases, urgent action statements, policy briefs, full-length reports, concept notes for webinars/conferences, and carry out other research oriented tasks 

  • Effective and respectful communication, active listening and teamwork skills 

  • Well organized, good time management skills and ability to multitask if required
