Introduction:

The School of Women and Gender Studies, Makerere University in collaboration with the Feminist Centre for Racial Justice(hereafter FCRJ), SOAS, University of London invites applications for two funded split site PhDs in Gender Studies. 

The School of Women and Gender Studies is Africa’s oldest and biggest School of Gender Studies with a mission of providing intellectual leadership for mainstreaming gender in all aspects of economic, political and social – cultural development. It is amultidisciplinary academic unit that is at the forefront of academic and community initiatives to address gender and development issues from an African perspective. The School works through a comprehensive strategy that includes teaching; research, publication and dissemination; outreach, networking and advocacy; and gender mainstreaming. 

FCRJ is one of several officially constituted research centres at SOAS, University of London. FCRJ, which is in the College of Law, Anthropology and Politics focuses on the majority world as geographies from which to build feminist imaginaries of “race”. The Centre brings together fields of enquiry that have developed in parallel: feminist theories on power, protests and change, studies of diasporas, critical race theories and migration studies. FCRJ’s mission is to become a global reference point for transnational knowledge on racial justice. We will forge a transnational understanding of racial justice by producing critical research to understand a problem – racism – and test strategies to build racial justice. Scholarship overview: 

1. Applications are invited for two fully funded PhD studentship (fees and stipend) to be held at the School of Women and Gender Studies, at Makerere University. 

2. These PhDs will be tenured at Makerere University School of Women and Gender Studies, with a semester per year spent at SOAS, University of London. 

3. The successful candidates will carry out an independent sub-project under the direction of your supervisors at Makerere University and SOAS University of London. 

4. The specifics of the research will be shaped by the candidate’s interests, but applicants should propose a topic that clearly aligns with the objectives of the Feminist Centre for Racial Justice.

We especially welcome candidates who are interested in exploring research projects that address the following themes:

1. Migration and Diasporas which includes explorations of domestic migrant labour 

2. Policing, Borders, and Carceral Frameworks 

3. Reparative Justice.

4. Artificial intelligence, digital innovations, technology and their racialised logics.

5. Feminism and Just Climate Transitions

6. Social Movements and Racial Justice

1. Applications are welcome from candidates who adopt an inter and transdisciplinary approach to the topics above.

2. Applicants are encouraged to explain in their applications how their profile and plans would fit the Feminist Centre’s scope.

3. Applicants must meet the standard eligibility entry criteria for PhD study at Makerere University
