Gender-based violence (GBV)
Main objectives of the role
  • Maintain and advise on a clear, cohesive and mission-driven communication plan
  • Maintain and update a content calendar
  • Create relevant communication materials in line with our branding and annual communication plan and arrange printing where needed
  • Identify strategic opportunities for both advocacy purposes and visibility
  • Plan and execute campaigns that increase awareness for the mission of the Mukwege Foundation.

Overall Responsibilities
  • Maintain and implement communication plan, policies and strategy
    • Advises on official Mukwege Foundation language and tone of voice  
    • Maintains professionalism – our outward look-and-feel should be accurate and of the highest quality 
    • Strategically plans and designs campaign execution, taking advantage of timely opportunities  
    • Oversees e-mail marketing language and strategy

  • Social Media 
    • Maintains professional and cohesive social media presence that engages followers 
    • Creates inspiring, inventive and engaging posts and maintains/executes content calendar to engage and grow followers
    • Monitors social media activity and mentions and responds to comment and messages as needed
    • Monitors relevant current events on social media 

  • Website Content
    • Responsible for the launch of the new (partially developed) website and ensuring regular updates when needed
    • Responsible for seeking approval of communications content by staff before publishing
    • Corrects errors, removes outdated content or language, and updates pages
    • Develops news articles in response to relevant events

  • Email marketing
    • Takes the lead in developing email newsletters to subscribers by compiling quarterly highlights with inputs from colleagues and stakeholders
    • Design email updates in line with the Mukwege Foundation brand  

  • Press Response and Releases
    • Responds to relevant press inquiries for the Mukwege Foundation by monitoring the [email protected] inbox 
    • Coordinates with programme managers to facilitate survivor interviews when requested 
    • Creates and deploys press releases upon the advent of breaking news, campaigns or responses from the Mukwege Foundation 

  • Design and printing
    • Advises on creative projects, including execution or facilitation of design 
    • Serves as the focal point for printing organisational materials (flyers, banners, business cards, reports, handbooks, etc.)
    • Leads on the design of internal communications materials such as graphics for the website, annual report, strategic plan, etc.

Required Qualifications, Skills and Competencies
  • Relevant degree (for example communications or marketing)
  • 3+ years of relevant working experience in an international non-profit organisation
  • Sound knowledge of social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) and online communications
  • Experience using WordPress, Google Analytics, SEO, graphic design (Canva), producing infographics and editing videos
  • Experience with social media management and email marketing platforms (ideally Hootsuite and Mailchimp) will be considered an asset
  • Knowledge of public relations principles and practices
  • Familiarity with managing and coordinating responses to press inquiries and media requests
  • Strong writing skills in fluent English
