Background of the assignment:
The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) is the United Nations office responsible for advancing international cooperation in the peaceful uses and exploration of space, and in the utilization of space science and technology for sustainable economic and social development. It also serves as the secretariat for the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS).
Purpose of the assignment:
The assignment falls within Space4Women. Space4Women is a project of UNOOSA to help address the gender gap, to strengthen awareness, capacity, and skills of individuals and institutions, with emphasis on promoting gender equality and equal access to opportunities in STEM education and the space sector. As a follow up to the recommendations of previous Space4Women Expert Meetings, the preparation of a comprehensive study on women’s participation in the space workforce at global level was recommended. The objective of the study is to gain a better understanding of women’s participation in the space sector to measure progress towards achieving gender equality.
The consultant will support the preparation of the study that will require undertaking desk-based research, preparing and conducting a survey, and developing a report based on the desk-based research and survey. The final report will provide an overview of the participation of women in the space sector.
Tasks to be performed:
Conduct desk-based research to identify existing relevant research and datasets.
Consult with experts.
Develop a research plan to identify detailed scope and methodology of the study.
Develop questionnaire to be submitted to relevant stakeholders.
Identify relevant stakeholders and distribute the questionnaire.
Collect and analyze data of questionnaire.
Prepare outline of the report to identify main sections based on the desk-based research.
Draft a report based on the findings of the questionnaire and the desk-based research, and finalize the report following supervisor’s feedback.

Qualifications/special skills
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in economics, political science, international relations, social sciences or a related field is required. A first level university degree in similar fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
At least two (2) years working experience in the field of implementing research is required.
Excellent research skills are required.
Excellent report writing skills and ability to synthesize information are required.
Familiarity with gender equality is required.
Familiarity with space sector is desirable.
At least two (2) years working experience in the field of implementing research is required.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is an advantage.
