The Treasurer of the SGP is a voting member of the Secretariat who plays the critical role of managing the funds of the organization. The Treasurer keeps financial records, participates in Secretariat meetings, promotes transparency in decision-making processes, and ensures proper financial management for SGP’s sustainability. SGP will train you!

Duties of the Treasurer
While many of the Treasurer’s duties involve accounting and banking, the Treasurer must also think about how the organization’s finances connect with the overall mission.

  • Financial management and oversight.
The Treasurer monitors the SGP bank account, manages cash flow and reconciles bank statements.
  • Budget management. A regular duty of the Treasurer is to monitor the budget and continually compare actual expenses against budgeted expenses. In addition to maintaining the budget, the Treasurer also prepares a simple financial report of monthly expenses and revenue for the Secretariat’s review at every meeting.
  • Support design of financial policies. The Treasurer takes the lead in helping the rest of the Secretariat follow financial policies or design new ones, such as who can access funds, who has check-signing authority, how expenses get reimbursed, use of the organization’s credit card and handling of small cash expenses.
  • Preparing Financial Reports and Filing Legal Forms. The United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requires nonprofit organizations to file Form 990 by the 15th day of the 5th month after the end of the organization’s accounting period. The Treasurer takes responsibility for making sure this form is filed by the proper due date. It is required that a nonprofit’s exemption application and past three annual returns with the IRS are available for public inspection. The Treasurer should always know where these documents are located and keep them safe and available for inspection.

Time Commitment
The person elected will serve for 1 year starting in January 2024 with the option of running to serve again after the end of that term.

Position Requirements
Work hours are flexible, though you must be available to attend an online team meeting every third Saturday due to the ongoing SGP work schedule for 2024. Having stable internet access and proficiency in languages other than English is a plus.

The Treasurer’s job isn’t any more difficult or time-consuming than any other position. The job is best filled by someone who has a knack for or interest in accounting and finance. It’s also preferable for the Treasurer to have knowledge about nonprofit management, but this information can also be learned on the job. It’s more important to be an honest person with high integrity who is committed to accuracy, transparency and timeliness. Additionally, the Treasurer must be a US Citizen (a legal requirement for US-based Non-profits)
