Specific Duties 
Lead the design of AWDF’s Communications strategy  
  • Lead the implementation, and when needed, the revision of AWDF’s Communications strategy, in alignment with the new AWDF Strategic Framework and good practice in the sector. Engaging the partners, movements and communities that AWDF works with will be a critical part of this
  • Lead the re-imagining of AWDF’s voice (messaging and tone) and oversee its infusion across communications products, contents and branding materials.
  • Lead the development and implementation of a social media content plan and calendar that will lead to increased community engagement across existing channels (Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube) and new channels (such as TikTok)

Lead the implementation of communications initiatives, products and contents amplifying the stances and work of AWDF and its partners
  • Oversee the development and diffusion of contents for AWDF’s website and social media channels, on an ongoing basis and at key moments (specific cause days, campaigns, etc.), and build AWDF’s profile in offline media as well
  • Working closely with colleagues especially in the Programmes department, develop and share/implement messaging, content, products to amplify AWDF’s grantmaking and programmatic initiatives, and the organisation’s feminist stances on key issues.
  • Working closely with colleagues especially in the Partnerships & Philanthropy department, contribute to the development of donor reports and proposals, and develop and share/implement messaging, content, products and initiatives to amplify AWDF’s philanthropic advocacy messaging

Lead the implementation of strategic communications initiatives 
  • Design and implement (with the team and consultants when needed) strategic initiatives that will advance AWDF’s strategic goals, including around building up African feminists’ voices, and fostering feminist consciousness building (e.g. online campaigns, workshops, trainings or convenings)
  • Design and implement (with the team and consultants when needed) grantmaking initiatives specifically focused on strategic communications. 
  • Design and implement (with the team and consultants when needed) strategic initiatives that will advance AWDF’s resource mobilisation priorities.  

Provide oversight, management and supervision of the Communications unit
  • Working closely with the HR and Admin Manager, Lead the recruitment, selection, retention and performance management retention of the Communications team members, ensuring adherence to AWDF policies
  • Support both the professional and personal growth and learning of Communications team members
  • Contribute to a team culture that values collaboration internally, cross functionally, a team of independent thinkers that feel empowered, a team that reflects the feminist principles and values of AWDF.

Qualifications 
  • A relevant post graduate degree in Communications/ media or similar discipline or a first degree with equivalency for post graduate degree through specific, relevant additional work experience. 
  • At least 8 years work experience in a Communications coordination role/ environment, preferably in a women’s or human rights organisation or civil society organisation
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and oral)
  • Excellent IT skills, including fluency in social media platforms. Knowledge of word press is an advantage
  • Excellent written and spoken English. Proficiency in French desired
